Not all losses will result in a plummet in the rankings — especially if the loss is to the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation.
Long Beach State following a four-game road loss to Ohio State this weekend jumped one spot to No. 3 in the new Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Media Poll that was released Tuesday.
The 49ers were the first team since the opening week of the season to win a game against the Buckeyes. Before that match, Long Beach was on a four-match winning streak, including a four-game victory versus St. Francis on Friday.
Long Beach State also benefitted in the recent media poll from a BYU loss. BYU dropped one spot to No. 4 following a conference home loss to No. 6 UC Irvine on Friday.
Along with these teams, UCLA remained at No. 2 and Hawai’i stayed at No. 5 to round-out the top-half of the National Media Poll.
The Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Media Poll is the only rankings in NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball solely determined by media members. The 10 teams receiving the most votes are ranked in the National Media Poll, while other schools earning votes but finishing outside of the top 10 are considered teams receiving votes.
Off the Block is a website that started in January 2011 and has become the nation’s leader in college men’s volleyball coverage. Springbak, Inc. is the official sponsor of the National Media Poll and produces high performance footwear used by professional athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB and U.S. Olympic teams and the top college teams in the nation.
