Two incoming college freshmen recruits capped off their club career with a national championship.
Harvard setter Matt Ctvrtlik and USC libero Michael Chang helped lead their club team Balboa Bay to the USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championship 18 Open title during the weekend in Dallas.
Balboa Bay finished the national tournament undefeated, including rallying from a one-game deficit and beating Sports Performance Mizuno in a decisive third-game overtime to win the national title.
Ctvrtlik, the son of former Pepperdine and U.S. Olympic volleyball player Bob Ctvrtlik, will join the Crimson after leading his club team to the Junior National finals three times throughout his club career. He also earlier this year earned a first-team all-state honors with his high school team.
Harvard finished last season in third place in the EIVA and advanced to the conference tournament semifinals for the fifth consecutive season.
Chang is one of five high school graduates to commit to USC for the 2017 season. The Trojans under first-year head coach Jeff Nygaard ended last season in 11th place in the MPSF and did not qualify for the postseason.
