LBSU ranked higher than Stanford in Selection Sunday RPI

Less than two-thousandths of a percentage point is all that separated No. 4/5 Long Beach State and No. 4/5 Stanford in the selection committee criteria category of RPI ranking.

Long Beach State finished at No. 4 and 0.0014 percentage points ahead of Stanford in the Selection Sunday RPI rankings that the NCAA released on Tuesday.


The 49ers narrowly edged out the Cardinal for the final at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament field that was unveiled during the weekend. Along with RPI rankings, Long Beach State held the edge in several other selection committee criteria categories including overall winning percentage when compared to Stanford.

BYU remained atop RPI rankings after winning the MPSF Tournament championship. The Cougars entered the postseason at No. 1 in the RPI.

UCLA made one of the biggest improvements in the RPI rankings as it jumped ahead of Ohio State to No. 2. The Bruins, an at-large bid and No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament, finished 0.0001 percentage points ahead of the Buckeyes, the MIVA champions and No. 3 seed for the NCAA Tournament.

The RPI rankings will be updated at the conclusion of the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
