What to know: Just about everything from a share of the first place in the conference to an opportunity for a player to become the National Newcomer of the Year front-runner is at stake as No. 3/2 UCLA travels to No. 4/5 Long Beach State. Both the Bruins and 49ers with five regular season matches remaining are in second place and can move into a tie with No. 5/4 Stanford for first place in the MPSF if it wins tonight. UCLA enters on a conference-best seven-match winning streak and had a road comeback five-game win against No. 11/10 CSUN on Thursday. Outside attacker JT Hatch in that victory led the Bruins with a season-high 20 kills. In addition, outside attacker Jake Arnitz started the week among the MPSF leaders with a 3.20 kills per game average, including having a team-high 17 kills on a .429 attack percentage in a win against the 49ers earlier this season. Long Beach State was ranked No. 1 in the national coaches poll and national media poll before losing two of its last three matches. However, the 49ers are 10-2 at home this season entering their home regular season finale. This conference match will also feature several the presumed front-runners for the National Newcomer of the Year. Long Beach State freshman outside attacker TJ DeFalco is seventh in the nation with a 4.22 kills per game average and a led all players with 21 kills in 49ers’ previous match versus the Bruins. Freshman setter Josh Tuaniga also leads the MPSF and is fourth in the nation averaging 11.09 assists per game, while guiding the Long Beach State offense to the nation’s fourth best attack percentage at .334. Along with 49ers’ freshmen, UCLA freshman setter Micah Ma’a has led the team’s 6-2 offense to the eighth best attack percentage in the nation at .312. He also is among the team leaders with a 2.21 kills per game average. In addition, Ma’a has a nation-best 45 aces — including the match-winning ace in the fifth game against the 49ers in January.
