What to know: No. 8/7 Pepperdine days after on the road upsetting the first-place team in the MPSF will now travel to one of the toughest environments in college volleyball and try to accomplish the feat again. No. 1/1 BYU on a nation-best 12-match winning streak will open a two-match home series versus Pepperdine. The Cougars during that streak won 35 consecutive games, including sweeping their last four matches at Smith Fieldhouse. In addition, BYU moved into a tie with No. 2/2 Long Beach State for first-place in the MPSF after Pepperdine upset No. 3/3 Stanford in five games on Saturday. This weekend conference series will also feature the top two blocking teams in the nation. The Cougars have a nation-best 3.36 blocks per game average. In addition, middle attackers Michael Hatch and Price Jarman are the only players in the nation to average at least 1.40 blocks per game and play in at least two-thirds of their team’s matches. Pepperdine is second in the nation with a 3.07 blocks per game average. The Waves have played the last five matches without middle attacker Tommy Carmody, who leads the team with a 1.79 kills per game average. Along with the team’s defense, opposite Matt Tarantino had a match-high 21 kills in the upset versus Stanford and was named the MPSF Player of the Week. The senior is also among the national leaders with a 3.62 kills per game average. BYU All-American opposite Ben Patch is in the nation’s top five averaging 4.49 kills per game and last week was named the AVCA National Player of the Week.
