What to know: No. 3/3 Stanford has well exceed expectations for a team predicted in the preseason polls to barely make the postseason. Stanford with about a month remaining in the regular season can move into sole possession of first place in the MPSF if it beats No. 10/10 Pepperdine. The Cardinal enter this road match on a seven-match winning streak and in a three-way tie for first-place in the MPSF with No. 1/1 Long Beach State and No. 2/2 BYU. Stanford has more than a .325 attack percentage all but one match during its winning streak, including hitting at least .400 three times. All-American setter James Shaw started this week among the nation’s leaders with a 10.22 assists per game average and has guided the offense to the conference’s second best attack percentage at .351. In addition, middle attackers Conrad Kaminiski and Kevin Rakestraw are both in the top 10 of the MPSF hitting more than .475. Rakestraw also had a career-high 11 kills and zero attack errors on a .786 attack percentage in a road victory against No. 14 UC Irvine last week. Pepperdine is second in the nation with a 3.30 blocks per game average and have held its opponents to a .242 attack percentage this season. However, the Waves have been without middle attacker Tommy Carmody, the conference’s leading blocker, for the last two matches. Pepperdine survived an upset scare to beat last-place UC San Diego in five games on Wednesday and remain in sixth place in the MPSF. Freshman outside attacker David Wieczorek also has more than 15 kills in Pepperdine’s last two matches, including a season-high 19 kills against UC San Diego.
