What to know: No. 4/4 UCLA and No. 10/7 Ball State more than 50 years since first playing each other in the 1964 USA Volleyball National Collegiate Tournament will once again renew their non-conference rivalry. The two winngingest programs in college men’s volleyball history both enter this match among the top of their conference standings. UCLA has won six of its last seven matches and is a half-match out of first-place in the MPSF. In addition, Ball State dropped to a half-match out of first place in the MIVA after losing to Grand Canyon on Saturday to snap its 11-match winning streak. This match will also feature two of the top middle attackers in the nation. UCLA middle attacker Mitch Stahl is sixth in the nation with a 1.38 blocks per game average and is among the MPSF leaders with a .431 attack percentage. Ball State middle attackers Matt Walsh and Alex Pia are both in the nation’s top 15 averaging more than a 1.15 blocks per game average. The Cardinals also lead the MIVA and are third in the nation averaging 2.92 blocks per game, while UCLA is fourth in the nation at a 2.65 blocks per game average. This will be the first meeting between Ball State and UCLA since they each other in the 2011 Outrigger Invitational. The Cardinals have never won a road match against the Bruins in their series history. However, Ball State swept a two-match series against UCLA in 2008 and beat then-No. 1 UCLA in the 1995 Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic. Along with the history of the two programs, the result of this non-conference match could be critical for the Bruins earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Among the criteria the selection committee uses to determine the NCAA Tournament field includes non-conference record and record against teams under NCAA Tournament consideration. Both Ball State and UCLA are considered teams under NCAA Tournament consideration, according to the latest Off the Block bracketology.
