What to know: There is plenty on the line for No. 12 Ball State entering one of its biggest home matches of the season. Ball State needs to beat the defending-NCAA champions No. 8/8 Loyola to extend its conference-best six-match winning streak and remain in sole possession of first place in the MIVA. The Cardinals during their winning streak have rallied from two-game deficits to win in three matches, including beating No. 6/7 Ohio State in five games on the road earlier this month. This conference match will also feature two of the top blocking teams in the nation. The Ramblers are fourth in the nation with a 2.79 blocks per game average, while Ball State is fifth averaging 2.77 blocks per game. In addition, Ball State middle attacker Alex Pia had a combined 12 blocks in sweeps against in-state rival IPFW and Barton last week and was named the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week. Preseason All-American middle attacker Nicholas Olson leads Loyola and is sixth in the nation with a 1.31 blocks per game average. Loyola opens a five-match road trip after losing to Ohio State on Friday for its first conference loss of the season. The Ramblers, though, are 16-1 in conference road matches in the last three seasons.

What to know: The nation’s top blocking team will return to the court from an 11-day layoff to play a top-10 ranked team. No. 9/9 Pepperdine coming off its longest break during the season will play host to No. 10/10 UC Santa Barbara to open a two-match home stand. The Waves enter this conference match with a nation-best 3.52 blocks per game average. In addition, middle attacker Tommy Carmody leads the nation with a 1.84 blocks per game average and has at least five blocks in six of the team’s last eight matches. Both the Waves and Gauchos are two matches out of first place in the MPSF standings. UC Santa Barbara swept both No. 11 UC Irvine and UC San Diego last week to end its three-match losing streak. UC Santa Barbara All-American setter Jonah Seif is second in the conference and among the national leaders with a 10.64 assists per game average.
