What to know: Despite it still being the first month of the season, this weekend’s two-match series is a near must-win for both No. 3/3 BYU and No. 9/9 UC Irvine. The defending-MPSF champions Anteaters have lost three of their first four conference matches and are ninth place in the MPSF. In addition, BYU enters this series in seventh place after splitting a two-match road series against No. 2/2 Long Beach State last weekend. This series opener will also feature two of the top offensive players in the nation. UC Irvine All-American outside attacker Tamir Hershko is fourth in the MPSF with a 4.21 kills per game average. Hershko also has at least 15 kills in every conference match so far this season, including a team-high 18 kills in a four-game loss to No. 6/4 Stanford on Saturday. BYU All-American opposite Ben Patch is fifth in the conference averaging 4.10 kills per game. However, Patch was held to less than a .125 attack percentage in both matches against Long Beach State last weekend. Along with the offense, UC Irvine has a combined 59 service errors in conference play and has yet to finish a MPSF match with fewer than 13 service errors.

What to know: One of the biggest surprises in the first month of the season will now face its biggest challenge of the season as No. 14 St. Francis plays host to No. 9 Penn State. St. Francis after starting the season 0-2 has defeated two nationally ranked teams in the last two weeks, including a five-game victory against No. 15 Ball State on Sunday. The Red Flashes were ranked at No. 14 in the latest national coaches poll — their highest ranking in program history. In addition, outside attacker Jeff Hogan has double-digit kills in three matches this season and led the St. Francis with a season-high 23 kills in an upset victory against Lewis earlier this month. Penn State enters its conference opener on a three-match winning streak. Outside attacker Chris Nugent was also named the National Player of the Week after having a combined 28 kills and more than a .500 attack percentage in sweeps against Ball State and IPFW last week. The Nittany Lions are 36-0 all-time against the Red Flashes.
