No. 2/3 Long Beach State (5-1, 2-1 MPSF) vs. No. 3/2 BYU (4-1, 2-1 MPSF)

What to know: No. 2/3 Long Beach State will have to find a way to hit around the block of No. 3/2 BYU to avoid getting swept at home. The two conference opponents will conclude their two-match weekend series after the Cougars had a MPSF season-high 15.5 blocks in a four-game victory against the 49ers on Saturday. Middle attacker Jarman Price finished with a match-high eight blocks and was one of three Cougars with at least five blocks. The Cougars also held the 49ers to a season-low .180 attack percentage. Long Beach State entered the weekend on a season-opening five-match winning streak and hitting a conference-best .392. Freshman outside attacker TJ DeFalco in the loss had a team-high 14 kills but was held to a zero attack percentage. In addition, middle attacker Taylor Greogry had 10 kills and zero attack errors against the Cougars. All three of BYU’s Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Preseason All-American selections had double-digit kills, including outside attacker Jake Langlois who had a match-high 16 kills. Outside attacker Brenden Sander added 14 kills, while opposite Ben Patch had 10 kills. It was also the first time this season Patch played in a match and did not have at least 20 kills.

No. 4/4 UC Irvine (2-3, 1-2 MPSF) vs. No. 8/5 Stanford (4-1, 2-1 MPSF)

What to know: It is still early in the season but No. 4/4 UC Irvine following an upset loss needs a big conference victory. UC Irvine travels to No. 8/5 Stanford after losing to No. 11/10 Pepperdine on Friday for the team’s second loss in its first three conference matches. Despite the loss to Pepperdine, outside attacker Tamir Hershko had match-high 18 kills. This was the fifth consecutive match to open the season that the All-American led the Anteaters in kills. In addition, UC Irvine had a season-high nine aces against Pepperdine. Stanford swept UC San Diego in its home opener on Friday to remain in the top half of the MPSF standings. All-American setter James Shaw in the victory had a match-high five aces and led the Cardinal offense to out-hit the Tritons .373 to .135. Stanford’s last victory against UC Irvine occurred in the 2014 MPSF Tournament quarterfinals and helped propel the Cardinal the NCAA Tournament finals. UC Irvine enters this match having only lost back-to-back conference matches four times since coach David Kniffin took over the program for the 2013 season.
