UC San Diego to open season vs. new EIVA school Charleston

The newest member of the EIVA will start the upcoming season with its first match in program history against a MPSF team.

UC San Diego announced earlier this week that it will open the 2016 with a non-conference home match against first-year EIVA member Charleston.

This will be Charleston’s first trip to the West Coast. The Golden Eagles competing as an independent finished their inaugural season in 2015 at 4-24, including going 0-4 against EIVA teams.

Charleston in the off-season earned membership to the EIVA and became the first school from West Virginia to join the conference. In addition, among the starters returning for the Golden Eagles in the upcoming season includes opposite and All-Independent Team selection Rajahl Moxey.

The Tritons with a roster primarily comprised of first-year starters finished last season in last place in the MPSF. UC San Diego, though, went 2-4 in non-conference play and had a road victory against Grand Canyon in the opening week of the season.

The season-opener against Charleston will be one of five non-conference matches for UC San Diego in the upcoming season.

UC San Diego a day after playing Charleston will have a home match against Grand Canyon on Jan. 9 and then play a home match versus Princeton on Jan. 27. It also will play a two-match home-and-home series against Holy Names.
