What to know: One of the greatest in-state rivalries in college volleyball will be reignited tonight as No. 10 IPFW travels less than 75 miles south to play No. 13 Ball State. IPFW enters this conference rivalry match on a six-match winning streak and with its highest ranking in the national coaches poll since 2008. It also will be the final regular season road match against Ball State for Hall of Fame coach Arnie Ball. Ball, a former Ball State all-conference setter in the 1960s, will retire at the end of the season after coaching IPFW for many than 30 years. Ball State is undefeated at Worthen Arena this season, including rallying from a two-game deficit to upset Penn State in its home opener. This conference match will feature two of the top freshmen in the conference. IPFW outside attacker Alex Harthaller was named the Off the Block National Freshman of the Week on Monday after having a combined 19 kills and four aces in sweeps against Lindenwood and Quincy last week. Ball State freshman middle attacker Matt Walsh leads the nation with a 1.68 blocks and won the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Player of the Month. He also tied a school single-game rally scoring era record with 15 blocks in a sweep against Sacred Heart in January.
