What to know: For a program that historically has been willing to travel anywhere in the nation to play to top-ranked teams, Grand Canyon won’t have to go anywhere for its biggest non-conference match this season. The Antelopes for the first time in their program history will have a non-conference home match against a top-10 nationally ranked as it plays No. 7 USC in its season opener. All-American setter Micah Christenson is among the starters returning who helped USC earn a berth in the MPSF Tournament last season. Christenson was the winner of the Lloy Ball Award in 2014 and spent the off-season as the starting setter for the U.S. Men’s National Team. With Christenson as its setter this summer, the United States won its first FIVB World League championship since 2008 and reached the second round of the FIVB Men’s World Championships. Grand Canyon finished last season in seventh place in the MIVA but had a 12-6 non-conference record. In addition, all-conference selection Ryan Mather returns to the Antelopes after missing all of last season with an injury and will move from middle attacker to opposite.
