Top college men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

Conference play is underway across the entire nation with several critical match-ups.

No. 5 Pepperdine traveling to No. 8 UC Santa Barbara in a battle between two of the conference’s preseason favorites highlights the slate of matches. In addition, No. 4 UC Irvine will conclude their two-match home series against No. 6 Hawai’i.

No. 6 Pepperdine (7-1, 4-1 MPSF) vs. No. 8 UC Santa Barbara (5-3, 1-3 MPSF)

What to know: The best blocking team in the conference will go up against one of conference’s the top offensive players through the first month of the season as No. 5 Pepperdine travels to No. 8 UC Santa Barbara. The Waves lead the MPSF and are second in the nation with a 3.15 blocks per game average, including having double-digit blocks in three of their last four conference matches. UC Santa Barbara outside attacker Kevin Donohue enters the weekend second in the conference with a 4.00 kills per game average. In addition, Donohue had a season-high 20 kills in five-game loss to No. 7 BYU on Saturday. Both regular season matches last season between Pepperdine and UC Santa Barbara went to a decisive fifth game with the teams splitting the series. The Waves also were the preseason favorite in the MPSF Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Gauchos finished the poll at No. 2.

No. 4 UC Irvine (9-2, 4-1 MPSF) vs. No. 6 Hawai’i (5-1, 2-0 MPSF)

What to know: No. 4 UC Irvine will attempt to complete the series sweep as it plays host to No. 7 Hawai’i. The Anteaters in the opener of the two-match series held the Rainbow Warriors to less than a .050 in two games of their three-game conference victory. Middle attacker Andrew Benz finished the match leading all players with seven blocks and was perfect on offense having six kills on six attack attempt. In addition, outside attacker Kyle Russell had match-high 11 kills, while Preseason All-American Zack La Cavera added 10 kills. The Anteaters are on a three-match winning streak and have not lost a game during that streak. A win for the Rainbow Warriors will also break several of their streaks. Hawai’i has lost its last 11 matches against UC Irvine dating back to 2011. In addition, the Rainbow Warriors have lost seven consecutive road matches against nationally ranked teams.

What to know: For the first time in seven years, IPFW will play a home match as a top-10 nationally ranked teams. The Mastodons jumped up one spot in the newest national coaches poll after it defeated Harvard and Sacred Heart last week to extend its winning streak to four matches. In addition, setter Omar Rivera was named the AVCA National Player of the Week. Rivera is second in the MIVA and among the nation’s top 10 with a 10.75 assists per game average. Lindenwood enters this MIVA opener against IPFW having won its only non-conference match so far this season against a NCAA Division I-II opponent. The Lions are also 2-2 all-time against the Mastodons since joining the MIVA in 2013.
