Comparison: Final RPI and coaches poll rankings from last two seasons

If recent history is any indication, don’t expect the college men’s volleyball national coaches poll and RPI to have similar team rankings next season.

Six times in the last two years a team that was ranked in the top 10 of the final RPI but finished outside the top 10 in final national coaches poll, according to documents recently published NCAA documents.

The NCAA released on its website the final RPI rankings from the last two seasons after approving a motion to include the RPI in the criteria used by the NCAA Tournament selection committee starting next season. The decision to publish the rankings was made at the request of the NCAA men’s volleyball committee in an effort promote transparency.

The MIVA benefited the most from the RPI rankings compared to the coaches poll rankings.

Ohio State finished the 2013 season at No. 4 in the RPI — 11 spots higher than its No. 15 ranking in the final coaches poll. In addition, Lewis ended last season at No. 2 in the RPI — nine spots higher than its No. 11 coaches poll ranking.

While the RPI rankings will be part of the selection committee criteria in 2015, the coaches poll is not used to help determine the at-large bids or seeding for the NCAA Tournament.
