Two current college men’s volleyball players will join the U.S. Men’s National Team for its upcoming series against Iran.
USA Volleyball announced earlier this week that USC setter Micah Christenson and Penn State outside attacker Aaron Russell were among the 14 players named to the U.S. roster for the USA Volleyball Cup.
The USA Volleyball Cup is a four-match exhibition series starting this weekend between the United States and Iran. This series will also be the United States’ final big exhibition event before the start of the FIVB Men’s World Championship.
Christenson remains on the U.S. roster after helping lead the nation in July to its first FIVB World League championship since 2008. The three-time All-American and 2014 recipient of the Lloy Ball Award also started almost every match for the United States during the FIVB World League.
Russell last season was named the EIVA Player of the Year and led Penn State to the NCAA Tournament semifinals. In addition, the All-American outside attacker was a part of the U.S. team that won the gold medal at the NORCECA championships earlier this summer.
The USA Volleyball Cup will be the first meeting between the two teams since the United States swept Iran in the FIVB World League semifinals.
The four-match series will begin Saturday at USC. The two teams will also play matches next week at the Anaheim Convention Center, San Diego State and UC Irvine.
