All-MPSF middle attacker Wes Dunlap had a team-high combined 27 kills as UCLA won both its matches on the final day of its preseason home tournament.
Dunlap in the Bruins’ opening match led the team with 14 kills to help UCLA defeat UC Santa Barbara 20-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11 on Saturday morning at the SAC Tournament.
The senior was one of three Bruins with at least 10 kills in the victory. Outside attacker Gonzalo Quiroga had 13 kills, while outside attacker Spencer Rowe added 11 kills.
Dunlap following UCLA’s morning match had a team-high 13 kills in a sweep against Cal State Northridge during the afternoon.
This was the first loss for the Matadors during the preseason. Cal State Northridge defeated USC 25-21, 26-24, 25-21 on Saturday morning to improve to 8-0 in preseason play.
USC in the tournament’s other afternoon match defeated UC Santa Barbara 25-23, 25-22, 25-18 — the first meeting between the two schools since the Gauchos upset the Trojans in the 2011 NCAA Tournament semifinals.
The SAC Tournament was a two-day preseason tournament at the SAC Gym, located on the UCLA campus. In addition, three of the four teams in the tournament — UCLA, USC and UC Santa Barbara — finished last season in the top 10 of the national rankings.
With its two victories on Saturday, UCLA ends its fall preseason 6-3. USC also finishes its fall preseason at 4-4.
