The top-ranked team in the nation now official has the best player in the nation.
USC outside attacker Murphy Troy on Thursday was named the 2011 American Volleyball Coaches Association Men’s National Player of the Year.
Troy finished the regular season ranked in the nation’s top 15 for kills per game average, attack percentage and aces per game average. The senior co-captain also was named a First-Team All-American and the MPSF Player of the Year.
USC (23-3, 20-2 MPSF) received the No. 1 seed to the NCAA Tournament after winning the MPSF regular season title. It also became the first team since 1996 to be ranked No. 1 from the preseason to end of the regular season.
This is the sixth time a Trojan has been named the National Player of the Year. Troy is first USC player to receive the award since Donald Suxho in 2000
USC will play the No. 4 seed UC Santa Barbara in the NCAA Tournament semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday in University Park, Pa.
