Despite the NCAA and NAIA men’s volleyball seasons being over, there is still collegiate men’s volleyball being played right now. Community college men’s volleyball, which boasts 15 programs in California, is wrapping up their regular season.

Orange Coast College (7-0) vs. Irvine Valley College (6-1)

What to know: These two teams played on Wednesday night in Irvine, with Orange Coast coming out on top in four games. The loss by Irvine Valley College was the first time the Lasers dropped a game this year, while opening game loss by the Pirates was just the second time they dropped a game this year. Both head coaches (Travis Turner at Orange Coast College and Ryan Windisch at Irvine Valley) played at their alma maters while also having coached their schools to state titles. Orange Coast College assistant Taylor Hammond was a four-year all-EIVA starter with Penn State, while Irvine Valley College assistant coach Nick Costello played for Hawai’i after transferring from Irvine Valley College. Six of the 43 NCAA Division I/II men’s volleyball head coaches this past year played men’s volleyball at the community college level, including the last three national champions (Charlie Wade – Long Beach City College, Alan Knipe – Orange Coast College). Recent Orange Coast alumni include All-Americans Kyle McCauley (UC San Diego) and Nick Amado (Long Beach State), while their coaching tree includes Alan Knipe (Long Beach State), Kevin Burch (Ohio State), and Brad Rostratter (Vanguard). Per Orange Coast College head coach Travis Turner, six of his players are currently committed to NCAA Division I/II programs with a seventh player deciding between two schools.
