What to know: The two co-winners of the 2020 EIVA Player of the Year will finally go head-to-head. Outside attacker Brett Wildman after missing the initial series last month will be on the court as No. 9/10 Penn State opens a two-match road series against outside attacker Alvaro Gimeno and No. 11 NJIT. Wildman has double-digit kills in all four matches since returning to the court after missing four matches in February. The All-EIVA selection in the latest match had 10 kills and zero errors on a season-high .667 attack percentage to help Penn State sweep NJIT. Wildman enters this weekend series in the top five of the conference with both a 2.94 kills per game average and a .371 attack percentage. Gimeno also is in the EIVA’s top five averaging 3.38 kills per game and hitting .327. Among the senior’s top performances this year included having a match-high 16 kills on a .652 attack percentage in a sweep against Penn State to split the two team’s previous two-match series. This was the second consecutive match that Gimeno hit more than .600 versus the Nittany Lions. The Highlanders begin the home series on a nine-match winning streak and have a one-match lead on the Nittany Lions for first place in the EIVA. The two teams last week were tied for first place, but Penn State had to cancel its series against Saint Francis because of coronavirus-related issues. With Penn State idle, NJIT swept its series against Sacred Heart to move into sole possession of first place.

What to know: No. 2/2 BYU has one of the best home-court advantages and atmospheres in college men’s volleyball, but it statistically has been even more difficult for MPSF teams to win at No.4/5 Pepperdine in recent years. The Waves are on a 14-match conference home winning streak as they enter a two-match home series versus first-place BYU. This winning streak that started in 2019 has included two victories against the Cougars. In the two programs’ most recent meeting, though, BYU swept the two-match home series with six of the seven games being decided by two points. BYU All-American opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez in that series had a combined 31 kills, including a match-best 15 kills and zero errors on an .833 attack percentage in the series opener. Fernandez, the 2020 National Server of the Year, also had three aces in the series finale against Pepperdiine last month and has multiple aces in all but four matches this season. Pepperdine middle attacker Austin Wilmont enters this series after being named on Tuesday the National Player of the Week. Wilmont had both a season-high nine blocks and 12 kills on a .500 attack percentage in a four-game victory against No. 6/7 UCLA last week. In addition, Wilmont is second in the MPSF and in the nation’s top 15 with a 1.10 blocks per game average. Pepperdine is in second place in the MPSF and one-and-half matches behind first-place BYU.
